Prominent Personalities in AI Space

By Vishakha Thakur

When we think of artificial intelligence, humans rarely come to mind.

AI has become a crucial business tool; thus, we frequently commend AI companies for their pioneering efforts to assist organisations as they digitally evolve.

But what about the people in the company who are inventing and creating these innovations?

To highlight the importance of humans in the development of intelligent robots, we look at the best-in-class leaders in the AI area who are still helping to evolve the technology.

Geoffrey Hinton

Geoffrey Hinton, a well-known computer scientist often regarded as the godfather of AI has been a strong pillar in the history of AI development. His contributions involve development of artificial neural networks along with learning algorithms. He co-authored a seminal study with David Rumelhart and Ronald Williams on the notion of backpropagation, a method of training artificial neural networks dubbed “the missing mathematical piece” required to accelerate machine learning. This notion has played an important role in building algorithms that can learn to recognize patterns and correlations in big data sets, paving the way for convolutional neural networks and deep belief networks that are widely used in image recognition, natural language processing, and other AI applications

Andrew Ng

Andrew Ng is British born, who is well regarded for his career in technology, having co-founded and led Google Brain. Andrew served as Chief Scientist at Baidu, and also co-founded Coursera. Ng is now the CEO of Landing AI, a startup that helps others with limited datasets realise the business and operational potential of AI by advancing AI initiatives from proof-of-concept to full-scale production.

Sam Altman

Another influential personality in the AI space is Sam Altman. Being the co-founder of popular AI company OpenAI, his contributions in creating generative AI and releasing ChatGPT, has helped shape the next step of AI innovation. His generative AI chatbot became popular amongst tech companies such as Google and Meta and they too, invested heavily in creating AI. It has also inspired large major companies, like Microsoft and Tesla, to invest extensively in OpenAI’s research and development of AI, boosting the advancement and global use of AI technologies.

Doctor Fei-Fei Li

Dr. Fei-Fei Li has made enormous contributions to the machine learning and natural language processing area. Not only men, but women too have helped in reshaping AI. Dr. Li co-founded the ImageNet project, which is a vast dataset of labelled images that reshaped deep learning research in computer vision. Her efforts helped in advancing picture recognition including a variety of other AI applications. Her research has concentrated on developing algorithms capable of accurately identifying objects and scenes in photos and videos, even in complicated and dynamic contexts.

Andrej Karpathy

Andrej Karpathy, is well-known for his contributions in training deep neural networks based on enormous datasets. He is Tesla’s former senior director of AI who looked after the computer vision team for Tesla Autopilot. The project focused on data-labelling, neural network training etc. His previous works include OpenAI as he served as one of the founding members of the company. His qualifications include PhD in recurrent neural networks, natural language processing as well as intersection.

Kaifu Lee

Kai-Fu Lee is another AI leader who has made enormous contributions to the development along with deployment of AI technologies not just in China but around the world. Interestingly, Kaifu Lee’s dedication and work around speech recognition and natural language processing is often considered as an important aspect and contribution in the Artificial intelligence sector. Not only that; his contributions in speech recognition gave birth to the development of chatbots, virtual assistants etc. He was also a crucial part of the team that created the first continuous speech recognition system for Mandarin, which was a significant advancement in the field of natural language processing.
